Since the beginning of our journey, 8LACK OFFICIAL has been always a diverse cooperation that embraces many different races, ethnicity, genders, ages, cultures and anything that identifies us, including some of our team members from Armenia, who are devastated to hear about tragic events that have happened, and are happening in their home land. Today, we have created this page to speak up and take action to help Armenians.
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN ARMENIA?
- Armenia Is Under Attack
Armenia is a small country in Eurasia. On July 12, Azerbaijan, their neighboring country, attached a village in Armenia, breaking the UN's global ceasefire adopted due to COVID-19. Armenia endorsed this global ceasefire. However, Azerbaijan refused to sign.
- Azerbaijanis Call For War During Global Pandemic
On July 14, tens of thousands of Azerbaijani protectors chanted "Death to the Armenian" in the streets, demanding war against Armenia and the takeover of its capital city, Yerevan. On July 16, Azerbaijan threatened to blow up Armenia's nuclear power plant, an attack that could cause mass death.
- Why Is This Happening?
The conflict is over land at the southeast border of Armenia called The Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). It is 95% populated by Armenians with the same currency, banking, and languages as Armenia, but was annexed to Azerbaijan by Stalin under the USSR without much thought to the ethnic background of the region. Due to the conflict over ownership of this land, wars such as the Nagorno-Karabakh war (1988-1994) and the Four-Day War of 2016 have been fought over it in the past. It is currently a de facto independent state.
- Casualties of the July 2020 Attacks
On July 14th, the Azerbaijani army bombed a PPE mask factory to put more Armenian's lives at risk during this global pandemic. On July 14th the Azerbaijani army opened fire on the Armenian civilian population and civilian structures including a kindergarten. More than a dozen civilian homes have been destroyed ans people are living in their basements to survive the attacks.
- Anti-Armenian Sentiment
Azerbaijan receives support from Turkey, the country that killed 1.5 million Armenians in the Armenian Genocide in 1915. The mayor of the capital of Azerbaijan was quoted saying to a municipal delegation from Germany in 2005: "Our goal is the complete elimination of Armenians. You, Nazis, already eliminated the Jews in the 1930s and 40s, right? You should be able to understand us."
